- BROOKLANDS MUSEUM
- Brooklands museum is a mixture of aviation and motoring history centred about the famous
Brooklands banked oval motor racing circuit, alas now only partially restored. Brooklands
was the first motor racing circuit in the world when it opened in 1907. In the centre of
the circuit was a large grass airfield where successful aviators like A.V. Roe built and
flew their aircraft. Pioneering aviators soon used the airfield for their exploits and to
set up small factories to build the new flying machines.
Today the museum houses a
fascinating collection of aircraft through the ages, including a Bleriot XI replica,
Curtiss D Pusher replica and De Havilland DH82A Tiger Moth. Alongside these historic
aircraft are more modern types which were built at Brooklands, including the Vickers
Viking and VC-10 airliners. In the Wellington Hangar you can see the rebuilt Wellington
bomber, R for Robert, which was recovered from Loch Ness in 1985. Former Vickers workers
have spent many hours helping to reconstruct the geodetic design of the airframe.
- The latest exhibit is the initial British production Concorde, G-BBDG. See inside the
this famous aircraft, take a seat for the 'Concorde Experience' and discover Brooklands'
leading role in the Concorde story.
-
- The Motoring Village has the original tuning sheds where great record breaking cars of
Malcolm Campbell and John Cobb are displayed. There are also fine examples of Brookland's
racing cars and Grand Prix cars upto the modern era. Further attractions include the steep
Members Banking, a small part of the circuit still remaining, and the original Club House
which has been restored to its 1920's and 30's era, when Brooklands was known as the Ascot
of motor racing.
